Why blonde?

On rare occasions, tortoiseshell does not show the characteristic dark brown coloured areas caused by concentrations of melanin (an organic pigment) and appears light orange in color. This is because the scutes were not taken from the dorsal but rather from the ventral carapace of the animal, technically known as plastron. Plastron is much thinner than the dorsal plaques and in order to make it workable, it had to be bonded together as laminated plaques taking advantage their thermoplastic properties until a suitable thickness is achieved. Their yellowish to orange colour is behind its old English trade name "blond tortoiseshell" or "yellow belly".
